Mocking the mainstream and how the Internet is making it easier to do

Judd Apatow's new movie, Funny People, stars Adam Sandler as an established comedic movie star named George Simmons.
If you go to george-simmons.com, you'll see movie trailers and film posters for George Simmon's work. Here's a movie trailer of his movie 'Re-Do.'

With the Internet, a character can live with us outside the movie, and if this character has a blog/Facebook page/Twitter, he or she can react to current events, pop culture, and just update the fan on their life.

Now Adam Sandler is probably done with his character, George Simmons. But you take a movie like, This is Spinal Tap. That movie premiered in 1984 and fans had to wait eight years until they 'reunited' in 1992. Now the members of Spinal Tap have done pretty well furthering their characters without the help of the Internet, but just think of how many people would have followed David St. Hubbins's Twitter in the mid 80's.
