The Office is one of my favorite shows of all time. The character, Ryan, played by the show's executive producer, BJ Novak, is an unstable intern who's gone through the most physical changes and status changes of any other character on the show. He went from intern to Michael Scott's boss, to sales person (Michael Scott Paper Co.), back to intern. He had a coke problem, had a George Michael beard problem, even had his hair dyed blonde at one time.
Through all these transformations, my suspension of disbelief was suspended.
Until this year. Ryan has started sporting designer glasses, indoor scarfs, expensive plaid shirts, and trendy (expensive?) orange watches. Why? Why is Ryan's character suddenly dressing like a young executive producer? This is different then when he dyed his hair blonde. That was random, silly, something an
unstable Ryan would do. This sudden change in wardrobe needs to be explained. Either Ryan got a subscription to GQ, or BJ Novak is getting lazy.
Either way, the Ryan character is still a douche--but in a different Novaky type of way.
(new douche below).
You're back to blogging! And I agree, and wonder if I missed an episode where Ryan decides to dress differently.
ReplyDeleteThanks man.
ReplyDeleteYes, now I think there has to be a reason for why he's dressing like he is.
i specifically googled this and found your page. i like how im not the only one who is noticing this weird change. usually the office will have a character change go on for a few episodes and eventually explain it when the time feels right. this type of change has a different feel to it though.. its almost as if since hes the producer he can dress differently as a person and not address it as a part of the show.. its not very office-like and i NEED an explanation. although i am only on the third episode of season 7 the meaning could come out, but were running out of time lol
