Guess what? I bought some glasses. The same kind Steve McQueen used to wear.
Steve McQueen, the coolest person in the world wore mostly Persol sunglasses (he needs his own blog posting). He wore the 649 and the 714 models. The 714's are just like the 649's, but they fold---and are a little more expensive.
I have Persol 649's---actually the hallmark of the classic Italian
eyewear company. I got them on Ebay for around $140...not bad. They retail brand new for $360. The 649's have a cult following, their own Facebook page, and are featured in the Persol history 1950-70:

But this story gets even better...
While at the Brown Elephant, I came across these (above).
Another pair of 649's in a lighter tortoise shell and perscription (I'd like to meet the bloke who put prescriptions in these.)
The best part of this purchase was the purchase. They were $2.
That's right, $2. About $2.20 after tax.
I need to put sunglass lenses in them though. I thought about keeping them prescription (I have great eyes so it would be a light prescription), but after trying them on, I learned they give me a bad case of the 'Michael Caines.' And not in the good, ironic, hipster way either. (Thought: But does this mean their really hipster? hmm...)
This story has one more little nugget of awesomeness:
While resale shopping in Cali (yes, California), I found this for a dollar:
A vintage carrying case.
Wow, this story is so good, isn't it? And the protagonist, Eric, is getting everything he wants. Wow, I wish other parts of my life were this easy, but at least I can throw on a pair of classic sunglasses, stare up at the sky, and be a bad ass like Steve was.
about fuckin' time!
